| GM. This is **The Financial Darwin Awards**, where your worst trade is someone else's content.Wednesday belonged to the bond market. The ten-year Treasury yield touched about 5.36%, its highest since April 2002, and the Fed's minutes said most officials expect another rate hike by year end.**Four traders lost $98,257 between them, and every one of them was undone by a document.**A congressional report repriced a broker, and a set of release notes said where an upgrade had actually shipped. An auction result told one trader the buyers had not gone anywhere. A financing report told another who was paying for the AI buildout. The traders are composites. The moves are not. Here's what we've got today:📱Bought shares in their own broker. Congress read the org chart.🧪Went 20x long on an upgrade. It shipped to the test network.🏛Shorted Treasuries into the auction. The auction went fine.🚀Bought the AI buildout. It comes with $40 billion of debt.🤡Dumb memes from the trenches. 📑 THIS WEEK'S DAMAGE REPORT 📑$98KLost This Week77.2MWebull Shares Traded Wednesday∞Lessons IgnoredThe first number is the sum of the four stories below. The second is Wednesday's volume in Webull, about 5.6 times its three-month average of 13.8 million shares. 🏆 DARWIN AWARD OF THE WEEK 🏆Every issue we crown the single worst financial decision on the internet. This week it goes to someone who owned shares in their own broker, and watched them fall inside that broker's app. Here's the setup.u/i\_bought\_my\_own\_broker held 29,800 shares of Webull from Tuesday's close of $7.28, about $216,944.The thesis was loyalty, mostly. They used the app every day, liked it, and decided that a company they trusted with their money was a company worth owning. On Wednesday the House Select Committee on China published a report on Webull. It found that the company's "ownership architecture, technical workforce, technology infrastructure, cross-border data routing, corporate financing, and compliance frameworks were tied in structural ways to China."The committee said its concerns had "escalated" since October 2025, when Webull began carrying customer cash directly, creating what it called a "structural exposure of billions of dollars" in American capital.**They spent a year checking the stock in the app. Congress spent the year checking who built the app.**Let's run through the tape.•**Tuesday's close:** $7.28.•**Wednesday premarket:** down as much as about 30%, into the low $5 range.•**Wednesday's close:** $5.89, down $1.39, or 19.09%.•**Volume:** 77.2 million shares, against a three-month average of 13.8 million.29,800 shares, down $1.39 each, is $41,422.It was the stock's worst day in about a year. Webull is now down 56% since it went public in 2025. ![Brokerage screenshot: 29,800 Webull shares held from Tuesday's close of $7.28, position down $41,422.00, after BULL closed at $5.89, down 19.09 percent, on 77.2 million shares the day a House Select Committee on China report flagged the company's ties to China.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b6/c5/b6c5cfe6-f565-407b-a985-6ed38723f0e5/content/images/2026/10/image.png) Iu/i\_bought\_my\_own\_brokerr/stocks • 8h agoBought Webull on Webull. Found out it fell 19% from a Webull push notification.I tapped the alert and it opened my position, in the app, which is the company, which is the position. The report says 62% of the staff are in China and I had genuinely never wondered where the app comes from.*"I did not have concentration risk in my broker. I had concentration risk as my broker."* ⬆ 29.3k 💬 9.6k 🔖 4.4kHere's the thing. Webull disputes the report, calling it full of "significant inaccuracies and unsupported conclusions."It says the committee "had not sought clarification from the company before publishing it," and that its American business runs from offices in Florida and New York City.None of that changed the close. A stock does not wait for an argument to be settled before it prices the cost of having one. What this means: the risk was never that the app works badly. The app works fine. The risk is a decision in Washington about who gets to run it, and that decision has no earnings date.Robinhood fell 2.22% and Interactive Brokers 3.5% on the same day. The market charged the whole sector a little and one company a lot.Final bill: $41,422, for confusing a good user experience with a clean ownership structure.**What "headline risk" means for a stock like this:** Most business risks show up in the numbers first, as slowing revenue or shrinking margins. Regulatory and national-security risk does not. It lives in ownership structures, in where staff sit, in where data is routed and in which country's laws apply to the engineers, and it is invisible in the income statement right up until a government body writes it down. When that happens the stock is not repricing the business, it is repricing the odds of an outcome the business cannot control: restrictions, forced divestment, or customers leaving before either arrives. That is how a stock can fall 19% on a day when nothing about the product changed and the company says the report is wrong. The company can be right and the stock can still fall, because the market is pricing the cost and duration of the fight. Using an app every day tells you about the app. It tells you nothing about who answers to which government. 💀 THIS WEEK'S CASUALTIES 💀Not everybody can be Darwin Award of the week. These three gave it a real shot. Two of them never touched a stock.Casualty #1: The Trader Who Bought The Test NetworkOn Tuesday, Ethereum's Glamsterdam upgrade went live on Sepolia.Sepolia is Ethereum's test network. The coins on it are free, because the entire point of it is that nothing on it is worth anything.Glamsterdam is a big upgrade: a stack of core improvement proposals, including one that moves the split between block proposers and block builders into the core protocol.u/it\_was\_on\_the\_testnet read the headline on Wednesday morning and opened a 20x leveraged long on ether at the day's open of $2,697.42.That is a $457,000 position on $22,850 of margin. One problem: mainnet, the version with real money on it, is "targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026, with no confirmed date."•**Ether's open:** $2,697.42.•**Ether's low:** $2,553.64, down 5.33% from the open.•**Crypto liquidations in 24 hours:** $546.89 million across 101,772 traders, 88% of it longs.•**Largest single liquidation:** a $26.64 million ether position on Binance. At 20x, a 5% move against you is the whole margin. Their liquidation price was about $2,576, roughly 4.5% below the entry, because the exchange keeps a slice of margin in reserve.**Ether opened at $2,697 and traded at $2,554 by the afternoon in London. The $22,850 is gone.** ![Futures screenshot: a 20x leveraged long on ether opened at $2,697.42 with $22,850 of margin, liquidated near $2,576 and down $22,850.00, the entire margin, as ether fell as low as $2,553.64, a day after the Glamsterdam upgrade went live only on the Sepolia test network.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b6/c5/b6c5cfe6-f565-407b-a985-6ed38723f0e5/content/images/2026/10/image2.png) Iu/it\_was\_on\_the\_testnetr/ethtrader • 7h agoWent 20x long on Glamsterdam. Glamsterdam went live on Sepolia.I saw "Glamsterdam activates" and did not read the next word, which was the name of the test network. Ether fell 5% and the exchange closed me out somewhere around twenty five seventy six.*"The upgrade shipped to the test network. My liquidation shipped to mainnet."* ⬆ 22.1k 💬 7.3k 🔖 3.6kHere's what stood out. Even the coverage of the upgrade said "market data does not show that the testnet fork caused the move."Ether fell with everything else: bitcoin, a 24-year high in the ten-year yield, and Brent back above $101.Ether ETFs had $201.9 million of outflows on Tuesday, the sixth losing session in a row. Somebody was selling the whole time.A 20x position does not need to be wrong about Ethereum. It only needs one bad afternoon, and Wednesday had $546.89 million of them.**What 20x leverage actually buys you:** Leverage lets you control a position bigger than your cash: at 20x, every $1 of margin carries $20 of exposure, so $22,850 controls $457,000 of ether. Gains and losses are both multiplied by 20, which means a 5% fall wipes out 100% of the margin. In practice it is worse than 5%, because exchanges require a maintenance margin and close the position before your balance reaches zero, which put this liquidation about 4.5% below the entry. On an asset that moved 5.3% from open to low in a single session, that is not a stop. It is a countdown. The liquidation is also automatic: the exchange sells into the market, which pushes the price lower and trips the next trader's liquidation, which is how $546.89 million can disappear in a day. At 20x, being right about the year does not matter if you are wrong about the hour.Casualty #2: The Trader Who Shorted The AuctionFor three weeks the bond market had one story. The ten-year yield climbed from 5.00% in mid-September to 5.31% on Monday, and the question was whether anyone would turn up to buy the government's debt.On Wednesday morning the ten-year yield touched about 5.36%, its highest since April 2002\. That afternoon the Treasury was selling $39 billion of new ten-year notes.u/nobody\_wants\_ten\_years shorted ten-year Treasuries near 5.35%, on the theory that the auction would struggle and yields would keep climbing. The position was sized so every basis point was worth $3,150 to them. The answer?•**High yield:** 5.300%, against a when-issued level of 5.317%.•**Bid-to-cover:** 2.77, against an average of 2.54.•**Indirect bidders, which include foreign central banks:** 80.3%, against an average of 74.1%.•**Primary dealers, who take whatever nobody else wants:** 2.54%, against an average of 8.8%.Translation: buyers accepted a yield 1.7 basis points lower than the market had been asking for, and the dealers were barely needed.**The buyers they were betting against took 80.3% of the auction.**The ten-year fell to a session low of 5.29%. Covering there is a 6 basis point loss, and 6 times $3,150 is $18,900. ![Bond trading screenshot: a short ten-year Treasury position sized at $3,150 per basis point, opened near 5.35 percent and covered at 5.29 percent, down $18,900.00, after the $39 billion ten-year auction stopped 1.7 basis points through with indirect bidders taking 80.3 percent.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b6/c5/b6c5cfe6-f565-407b-a985-6ed38723f0e5/content/images/2026/10/image3.png) Nu/nobody\_wants\_ten\_yearsr/bonds • 6h agoShorted the ten-year into the auction. It stopped 1.7 through.Foreign demand was supposed to be gone, so I sold the morning high and waited for the tail. Indirects took eighty percent and dealers took two and a half, which is the auction equivalent of nobody needing a ride home.*"I was right that yields were high. I was wrong that nobody wanted them at that level."* ⬆ 16.4k 💬 5.1k 🔖 2.6kThe cruel part came later that afternoon. The Fed's minutes said "most participants assessed that another increase in the target range for the federal funds rate would likely be appropriate by year end."That is exactly the hawkish news a bond short wants. Yields finished little changed and still below the morning high.A yield at a 24-year high is not only a warning sign. To a buyer with $39 billion of appetite, it is a price.Cost of the lesson: $18,900, for treating a high yield as proof that nobody would buy it.**How to read a Treasury auction result:** Before an auction, the new notes trade on a "when-issued" basis, which sets the yield the market expects. If the auction clears at a higher yield than that, it has "tailed": the Treasury had to pay up to find buyers, which is bad news for bond prices. If it clears at a lower yield, it has "stopped through": buyers wanted the paper badly enough to accept less, which is good news for prices and bad news for anyone short. The other two numbers to watch are the bid-to-cover, which is how many dollars were bid for each dollar sold, and the dealer share. Primary dealers are obliged to bid, so a big dealer share means real buyers stayed away. Wednesday's auction stopped 1.7 basis points through, drew 2.77 bids for every dollar on offer and left dealers with 2.54%. A short position sized at $3,150 a basis point does not need the yield to collapse to hurt. It only needs the buyers to show up.Casualty #3: The Trader Who Bought The ChipsOn Wednesday the Financial Times reported that SpaceX is buying a lot more Nvidia chips. For u/the\_chips\_are\_the\_moat, who owned 3,500 shares from Tuesday's close, about $601,700, that was the entire bull case arriving early. They had not asked who was paying.SpaceX is seeking $40 billion of debt to buy the chips: $30 billion of investment-grade bonds and $10 billion of bank loans, with Apollo expected to lead and Pimco in early talks.•**SpaceX's close:** $167.60, down 2.51%.•**Five-year credit default swaps:** up as much as 14.5 basis points to about 195.4, a record for the company.•**When the financing is expected to close:** 2027.•**Distance from the 52-week high of $225.64:** about 26%.3,500 shares, down about $4.31 each, is $15,085.**The shareholders read "chips." SpaceX fell 2.51%.Compute is the moat, so more compute is more moat, so I was ready for a green day. Then somebody in the comments pointed out the chips are on a loan and the bonds were down before I had finished reading the headline.*"I was long the chips. The bond market was asking about the payments."* ⬆ 13.8k 💬 4.7k 🔖 2.1kSo here's the question: who is most exposed to a $40 billion borrowing? The answer is whoever lent money to the company before it.Existing bondholders now sit beside $40 billion of new debt, which is why the credit gauge hit a record while the stock lost only 2.51%.The equity still owns every chip. It also owns every repayment that comes after the lenders are paid. The receipt: $15,085, for reading the shopping list and skipping the invoice.**Why the bond market reacts to news like this first:** Shareholders and lenders are owed very different things. A shareholder owns whatever is left after everyone else is paid, so new debt that funds growth can look like good news to them. A lender gets a fixed return and is repaid ahead of the shareholder, so every new dollar of borrowing is another claim standing in the same line. A credit default swap is insurance against a company failing to pay its debts, and its price, quoted in basis points a year, is the cleanest real-time measure of how worried lenders are. When a company announces $40 billion of new borrowing and its five-year swaps jump 14.5 basis points to a record in one session, the lenders have told you they now see more risk in the balance sheet. A falling stock is an opinion. A record in the credit default swaps is a bill being drafted. 💯 THIS WEEK BY THE NUMBERS 💯We track the data because the data is funnier than anything we could make up.📱\-19.09%Webull, on the day of the House China report💸$546.89MCrypto positions liquidated in 24 hours, 88% of them longs🏛80.3%Indirect bidders' share of the $39B ten-year auction🚀195.4bpSpaceX five-year credit default swaps, a record**The ten-year yield hit a 24-year high in the morning, and in the afternoon foreign buyers took 80.3% of the auction.**The Fed raised rates by a quarter point in September, to a range of 3.75% to 4.00%, on a 12 to 0 vote.
